Spain v Greece 2-1 - Mission Accomplished…Next…

June 18th, 2008 | By: elisa | 27 Comments »

Is Spain the deepest squad in Euro 2008? I say Yes, emphatically. It wasn’t a very difficult game. The reserves did not have a lot of experience playing together. Nevertheless, I never felt that the team was in trouble and we were always going to win this game vs Greece.

Dani Guiza celebrates

All in all, a good win for La Roja. Guiza with an assist and a late goal. I am very happy for Dani Guiza. He is very much a loner, but a true professional. Some pundits were doubting his abilities, based on training and such, but he came through with flying colors. De La Red, made up for some of his first half mistakes, with a power golazo. Brilliant stuff! He is one for the future, most definitely. Both Cesc and Xabi Alonso played their hearts out. I thought Xabi was brilliant as captain. He maintained the shape of the team, orchestrated the transition from defense to attack, and demonstrated an excellent work effort. Poor guy, he really wanted to score too. I hope he gets another chance. Santi Cazorla looked healthy and really good when he came in after the break. Both Sergio Garcia and Karagounis were duking it out throughout the match. Sergio definitely won this battle IMO. He may have lost alot of balls, but man did Sergio cause some havoc. Kudos to Navarro in defense for a solid performance. Did you know that this is the 9th consecutive win for Aragones? Not bad, eh?

Will me miss Ximo (Joaquin) or another winger? Will we miss Guti or Raul? I don’t think so.

The Spanish press is full of revenge and vendetta warnings vs the Italians because of the 94 World Cup. I just want a good game of football and a Spain win! This is our moment! España por siempre~*

I am both Italian/Spanish and am routing for Spain on this one. Italy played good against a lousy France team. If Toni regains his shot accuracy, Spain could be in trouble. But I think the Spanish team will be playing extra hard since the world knows them as 2nd round chokers.

Should be a GREAT game!

@dave, ur emphasis about the spanish team playing extra hard is cracking me up..as if Italia will relax and allow spain to play extra hard..if one thing is sure i know that Italia now that they have ataged a great escape will not for a moment be relaxing..Also, Italia wont be sucked in by counter attacks of spain..look let us be honest, against Russia and Sweeden, spain scored akmost all the goals by counter attacks, swift ones..iam sure italians have done their home work and if they prevent that counter attacks from spain, i have every reason to believe that Spain will be rattled..Plus the biggest concern to Spai nshould be the fact that Luca Toni will be raring to open his account..according to the LAW of AVERAGES, the spanish defence led by the dwarf Puyol( who is very fast but nothing a nil in air) is in for a very very hard time..and definately, i consider the spanish defence as a joke compared to the French or Romanianm defence which played Italians..the idea is just to block the spanish midfield and not to get sucked in by their counter attacks….3-1 or 2-0 to Italia

@ racist Porshity seriously you are the biggest hypocrite, you nullify that the Spanish are racist when you are calling us/them Moors of Europe. This by a person who claims there is no place for racism. You can really tell there is a lack of education with you. Go to your italian blog and cry to them cause us hispanics just dont care.

porchetta you are so hard to understand–your typing and grammar is so poor that it’s hard to even make out your racist comments. why don’t you fix both problems by leaving?

>>But I think the Spanish team will be playing extra hard since the world knows them as 2nd round chokers.<<

Were they not wanting to play extra hard in 2006, 2002, …? They did, and that was not working for them. On the contrary, the presure of “wating to play extra hard” hurted them in each playoff game.

Spain peaked too early, again. Same for the Dutches. Between the two team, only one will go through the 1/4s. And the other is finished in 1/2s.

Porchetta, please do not assume that everyone believes everything that they read in Marca. Marca is there to sell papers, nothing more. A little humility and calm is needed. Let’s not take pot shots at each other. This is just a football game, not war.

nonsense? Remember 1990?

Remember this: There is non but one “world beater” team that had ended up winning to the end - Brazil. Even Brazil can’t do it in 1982. No other team did it. It’s always the humbled that win the end. Once you belive you are a world-beater, your mental state changes. But you could not help it, could you? It’s human nature.

spain & italy were both conquered by the same empire early on, what does it matter anyway

like i said on the other post all of europe comes from mesopotamia

the only reason (some) northern italians are white is because the sun isn’t as harsh and you evolved over time…nobody’s “true” white…

so please, please, please, get over yourself. there is no such thing as a “pure” northern italian anyway if you come from somewhere else. so shut up.

Let’s go Spain! I am for Portugal, but now that Portugal is out of the tournament I would love to see Spain win this thing. Good luck!

I think Porchetta’s comments clearly highlight the problem with racism in football and in general. To turn a purely footballing debate into one about race and those of Moorish decent, while also not recognizing the racist nature of his/her conduct.

@ Jason Lujan & rojaynegra: Let’s not entertain this imbicile any further

Well put Daniel. On Sunday, racist excuses will be all he has left. Anybody heard anything more about the row between Sergio and Aragones? Ramos needs to step his game up on Sunday; he can’t afford to be distracted, and he doesn’t really have any replacement. Daniel, did you read about Villa’s apparent display of solidarity with our beloved Che? http://www.goal.com/en-US/Articolo.aspx?ContenutoId=744913
Although it might be short-lived, I have a glimpse of hope. It has certainly been a welcome change from the daily articles detailing his imminent departure.

Hey Tim, yeah I read it. Best thing I’ve read all week.. stark contrast to Cristiano Ronaldo’s whoring of himself toward Real Madrid. I know it’s tough the way contracts are set up in football to move to a club you want to, but at least have some class. I’m sure Villa won’t mind playing for Madrid, but the difference between his conduct and Ronaldo speaks to Villa’s class and Ronaldo’s lack thereof.

Agreed, I think Villa is showing a touch of class. Very difficult in this money hungry world. I just hope Sergio Ramos gets his head on straight. We really don’t need any divas right now. He tried and pulled the same kinda of BS this year with Madrid. Very immature.
