Spain

We’re in the Final

Words can’t describe the sheer jubilation I feel ahead of Sunday’s Euro 2008 final against Germany.

It’s like the news that Spain’s advanced to their first final in 24 years hasn’t really sunk in …

Is it true? Are Spain really playing for the European championship this Sunday?

No, really … pinch me. Spain vs. Germany for the Euro 2008 championship???

Wow … I’m stunned.

As far as the game went, we started slowly against a determined Russian side. David Villa’s injury in the first half seemed to spell doom, but coach Luis Aragones put in Cesc Fabregas in an apparent attempt to bottle up the midfield and it worked like a charm.

The Spanish ran the Russians ragged and the goals by Xavi, Daniel Guiza and David Silva were just. Russia were simply over matched and overwhelmed.

I’m not saying this to pick fights or throw dirt in anyone’s faces. I’m simply stating facts.

If Spain plays Germany like they did against Russia in the second half, we’ll be champions.

Of that, there’s no doubt.

The unfortunate news is that Villa will probably not play Sunday’s game. He’s been superb and it will be a bitter pill to swallow for the Valencia striker.

But Spain is fully loaded. Cesc looks like he’s ready to take on the world. Guiza provides an excellent poacher’s touch off the bench. Xabi Alonso locks down the midfield.

And can we forget the work of Marcos Senna, the MVP of this Spanish side? He’s magnificent.

Carlos Marchena has been wonderful in defense.
Iker Casillas is a saint between the posts.
Sergio Ramos has provided some great runs and good service from the back.
And Fernando Torres doesn’t stop running …

Germany is a tough opponent. They have the pedigree. They have an efficient system. They have wonderful players and a strong desire to win this tournament.

But honestly, this feels like destiny. Can anyone stop this train?

Spain’s going to win the Euro 2008. I’m confident we can pull this off …

Me too Cesar. I feel like Spain deserves this Euro, no doubt about that. Germany already lost against Croatia and struggled against Turkey. Spain has won all of its games, and played some very entertaining football. You can see when they step on the field, they just wanna play the game before thinking about what the score is gonna be. This attitude is leading them to historic achievements. And add to that the talent that Espana possesses, you will be soon looking at a Championship winning side. To be honest I’ve always been an avid fan of Serie A and Italina football, I never had a chance to watch La Liga. Last year, I decided to get GolTV (I live in the States) and check it out, and what a shocker it was! I could not believe I was missing out on that great league for years now! The Spaniards, to me, play football like I always wanted it to be played: SKILLZ! In Italy, it’s different, and many Serie A games can get very boring and overwhelmed with tactics. I am now a huge fan of La Liga and Spanish football in general. By the way Cesar, my favorite player in La Liga is Luis Garcia of Espanyol. I wonder why he’s not playing for Spain at the Euros?

I hope Porchetta doesn’t contaminate this happy post too with his stupid racist remarks…
    Spain can win.
    I feel it.

In my opinion i think that Spain should play Barcelona style and keep the ball with them at all times until the German defense (not their strong point) messes up. Also we should pressure the flanks like we did with Russia because Lahm isn’t a good defender and the Germany has always had problems with the right flank. Ramos should continue making those nice runs. We shouldn’t take as many far shots because our midfield can make chances if they keep the ball longer.
    GO SPAIN
    EURO CHAMPS 2008!
    Break the curse!

my only concern is size… the only reason germany beat portugal is because the refs dont care if the germans push their opponents around, with the spanish being the smallest team on set pieces they will have to be very aggressive, other than that, germany isnt in the same league of play as spain

  • Joe

Vamos España~! The team just has to be able to defend those set pieces! DEFEND those set pieces! To me, that seems to be the critical issue here. I imagine the Germans to close up the defense and depend on set pieces to score…

MoMo: isn’t GolTV a god-send? You’ll be able to watch the best team, not really, in the country–Valencia–every week this upcoming season. I think the key to our success, the Greece game notwithstanding, is scoring that first elusive goal. Thereafter, we keep possession and infuriate the opponents, who are now forced to chase the game. It also opens up space, as the defense is forced to push up in pursuit of the equalizer, and our attack puts in the final nail in the coffin. However, the first goal may not come, and it will be interesting to see if our boys can withstand a early deficit to the germans. Hopefully we won’t find out. Viva Espana. Sunday’s gonna be crunk; might have to take a sick day on Monday.

I think spain has a good shot of winning, but Germany may pull of an upset. Curious: Who do you think will win 2008 Euro?

This is our time! 24 years later… I can feel it. The beautiful dance of La Seleccion. Let’s do it for Villa~*

  • Albo

    Go Spain, ponga huevo !!!!!

  • DvlDawg

Spain great win yesterday. Second half was a soccer clinic in my eyes.
Keep up the constant pressure and Germany will break. It’s been a long time coming, but your doing with such perfection.

  • Alyssa

Spain are a wonderful team. They play intelligent and entertaining football. They fully deserve to win the Euro 2008. It upsets me that Villa isn’t playing. I’m hoping Podolski doesn’t score due to the mere fact that I want Villa to win the award. But continuing on, I think that Spain has a good chance without him, afterall they won 3-0 against Russia without him. Hopefully God gives us what we want, which is a defeat against Germany. Viva Espana, this cup is ours! Spaniards, get ready to parade your neighborhoods in Spain jerseys, with Spain flags.

  • Daniel

Viva Espana!!! Strangely enough two girls from Frankfurt just came to take a look at my apartment.. they’re hopeful for Sunday but they admit they think Spain would win.

  • Momo

hey Alyssa, you might wanna change your wording a little, I know what you meant when you said “Hopefully God gives us what we want, which is a defeat against Germany.” but do you know that this actually means a loss against Germany?..clearly that’s not what you intended to say..but I hope this is not a sign :(

Amazing display by the spaniards, they definitely deserve the title but ill wait until it happens since history can jinx the run.

In my opinion italy was the most intimidating and hardest match, the germans are pure order on the pitch as opposed to a creative spain. Similar to the portuguese match only that scolari’s side swaps positions too often and their own team will get lost on the turf. Spain will try to play possession and work hard on keeping an offsides defensive line as sharp as the italy face off. A pity Villa is out, i read many posts in which everyone thinks fabregas should start and i differ for the reason that its too much of a crowd with xavi, iniesta and silva. Fabregas needs to feel that he’s handling the team and xavi interferes with his perhaps mental strength or simple positioning on the pitch. If aragonés starts with the barca duo, i say let the germans get used to them for the first half and then let the bomb go in the second half.

Torres needs to come out now since he hasn’t been lucky enough and he’s also used to a more breaking side at meryside while spain plays the absolute contrary. Hopefully the germans will attempt to attack a lot which will open more spaces for spain to play their comfortable type of game.

  • kmhui

I actually support both the Germans and Spaniards but up to this point, Spain has got the momentum, consistency and beautiful game. Casillas is better at goal than Lehmann (almost let slip a ball over his head in the Turkey match).
The German’s defense is not that solid and this is where Villa is so deadly one to one. Would have love to see Villa play in the match if not for his injury. Spain’s defense got to watch out for those crosses cos Ballack and the Germans are strong in the air. Sergio Ramos got to tact Ballack and Podolski. Can’t wait to see this final, it’s a titanic match and Spain deserves to be there!

  • Arminius

The good thing for us if we lose it will not be disgrace since Spain have been the best team so far.

I just hope nothing imponderable happens (injuries, red cards,, ref failures).

    Greets fom Germany

  • Arminius

    Poeketta:

    Oink oink your language.

  • Arminius

    PORKetta, that is.

    Oink ?

  • kenoxite

@Porchetta: Better go back to your middle ages dungeon. XXI century is too much for your poor IQ. Italy lost. Learn to live with it.

Anyway, I’m also excited about the final. Spain has been playing superbly so far. I think everybody has been enjoying our football style: effective and beautiful. This team is a gift for those who really love football, so that’s quite an achievement whatever the final outcome is.

Lots of respect to the German team and good luck to them both. Although my heart is with Spain :)

  • http://spain white is right

porchetta….did you forget to take your pills today? now be good and no.. don’t eat that plastic fork, hey!

  • texanspaniard

Is there no way to ban Porchetta? He turns everything ugly with his insane babble.

VIVA ESPANA! MAKE THE DREAM COME TRUE TOMORROW!!!

  • Jason Lujan

Viva Espana I have been waiting for this moment since the last world cup and really really got into football thereafter. This is a big one and I think we can beat ze Germans on Sunday AMUNT ESPANA Y VALENCIA CF!

  • Jason Lujan

@ Pobreshit dude get a life you must sit at home by your poor self and think of racist comments all day get over your southern-northern whatever little ITaly lost get over go cry on another blog.

  • Alyssa

Momo, haha sorry yes that is what I meant.
Porchetta, it’s funny how the only thing you have against us Spaniards are two things:
    1) We sent your country home, cheers to that.
    2) How spanish people have dark skin.
    Get over yourself :)

  • Joury

Im SO stressed so excited! THEY deserve to win ! more than any other team !

  • drunvalo

porchetta has got his own issues, unfortunatly i think most of europe think like him, hence the stop racism campaign at the tournaments. best to ignore. although i think he is just a decoy to give italy team bloggers a bad name.

anyways, as a neutral, im cheering for a back and forth match tomorrow with many quality chances. what i predict though, especially cause its a final, is spain to hold the ball as much as possible, and germany, without balack, to sit back and try and counter. in the end another snoozer like the games against italy and russia.

germany win with a set peice goal (short spaniards wont be able to defend) or PKs
