Some Quick Tidbits or La Roja Update

June 9th, 2008 | By: elisa | 13 Comments »

* Luis Aragones is trying to keep the pressure off the team. They have trained and prepared behind closed doors. Today’s schedule included light training, gym work, and the spa. Sounds very relaxing.

* Luis admitted to the Spanish press that the defense is our weak spot. We’re no Italy, but he says that we are working on it. (No sh*te sherlock). He also claims that everyone is rested and ready to play, including Villa. He will play two upfront and attack. (Torres and Villa, ok sounds good).

El Guaje

* Frightening statistic – Spain has only won 3 of the last 6 Eurocups that the team has participated in. Ouch! OK gotta stay positive. This could be our year. We could be the dark horse. We have the quality and depth. Anything is possible in this tournament, a true knockout tournament. I really love how the big teams knock each other out.

*I hope the team is getting anxious and eager to play; eager to prove themselves on the pitch. I hope people discount us and don’t expect too much, so we can surprise them. The overhype in the Spanish press was way too much. They need to give it a rest and support the team. Vamanos!

According to the Spanish press – Aragones will play two upfront. Now you know Aragones, he could change everything to piss everyone off, so let’s see.
Villa looks to have recovered though, which is good news.

Ramos, Capdevila, Villa, Torres, Iniesta, Xavi – we have plenty of fire powers and keys to success. We just need to clear our minds and play our a***off.

Aupa!

Casillas, IMO has a strength, fearlessness, and winning mentality that others can only hope to have. He is immensely mature and a leader on the pitch. A goalkeeper makes a good manager and captain as they see all of the ongoings on the pitch. He is also the world’s best goalkeeper, IMO. Of course Aragones is very Madrid centric as well.

I wonder how easy it is for Casillas to communicate with all of his players though – does he wait for set pieces, when attention should be directed elsewhere? Though Casillas is one of my favorite players on the pitch wearing Red, I’ve never been sold on making the keeper the Captain.

Puyol certainly has all of the leadership qualites you listed, Elisa, but I think Casillas was merited the captain band due to his unbelievable form in La Liga, as opposed to Puyol who’s beginning to show some rust.

You right John, that is definitely another factor. But don’t diss the keepers as captains just yet. Van der Sar and Buffon (both captains) went head to head today. Buffon didn’t make the team selection. But I believe they are both suitable picks.
