06 or 02? Which Spain squad is best?

May 18th, 2006 | By: Ian | 3 Comments »

Spain’s 2002 World Cup run ended with the heartbreak of a quarterfinal loss on penalty kicks. The ‘02 squad wasn’t bad, but I think you can safely call Spain’s 06 squad a better team. So which would you choose? The Spain squad from ‘02, led in scoring by Raul and Morientes, which lost in the quarterfinals? Or is it the Spain squad from ‘06, which boasts a youthful look that includes Fernando Torres and David Villa as their top goalscorers?

2006 Spain World Cup Squad:
Goalkeepers: Iker Casillas (Real Madrid), Pepe Reina (Liverpool), Santiago Canizares (Valencia)
Defenders: Antonio Lopez (Atletico Madrid), Pablo Ibanez (Atletico Madrid), Carles Puyol (Barcelona), Juanito (Real Betis), Asier del Horno (Chelsea), Michel Salgado (Real Madrid), Sergio Ramos (Real Madrid), Carlos Marchena (Valencia)
Midfielders: Cesc Fabregas (Arsenal), Jose Antonio Reyes (Arsenal), Andres Iniesta (Barcelona), Xavi (Barcelona), Joaquin (Real Betis), Luis Garcia (Liverpool), Xabi Alonso (Liverpool), David Albelda (Valencia), Marcos Senna (Villarreal)
Forwards: Fernando Torres (Atletico Madrid), Raul (Real Madrid), David Villa (Valencia)

2002 World Cup Squad:
Goalkeepers: Iker Casillas (Real Madrid), Ricardo Lopez (Valladolid), Pedro Contreras (Malaga)
Defenders: Curro Torres (Valencia), Juanfran Garcia (Celta Vigo), Carles Puyol (Barcelona), Fernando Hierro (Real Madrid), Enrique Romero (Deportivo), Miguel Nadal (Real Mallorca)
Midfielders: Ivan Helguera (Real Madrid), Ruben Baraja (Valencia), Javi de Pedro (Real Sociedad), David Albelda (Valencia), Gaizka Mendieta (Lazio), Juan Carlos Valeron (Deportivo), Sergio Gonzalez (Deportivo), Xavi (Barcelona), Luis Enrique (Barcelona), Joaquin Sanchez (Real Betis)
Forwards: Raul (Real Madrid), Fernando Morientes (Real Madrid), Diego Tristan (Deportivo), Albert Luque (Mallorca).

Give me Spain ‘06 any day. The center midfield combinations are just too dangerous.

I agree that 06 is superior. But Aragones must resist the pressure to play an out-of-form Raul. This attack:

——Iniesta——-
–Cesc——–Xabi–
Garcia———–Reyes
——–Villa——–

can play with any team in the world. The loss of the great Fernando Hierro is the biggest loss from 2002.

actually Villa had 25 goals and finished 1 behind etoo for pichichi honors. He will be the grand surprise of the WC. Not the overated Toni.
