A great weekend to be a Spaniard

June 12th, 2006 | By: Ian | 15 Comments »

The Spain World Cup team has been sent to the back pages of newspapers throughout Spain.
That’s because Spaniard Rafael Nadal defeated Roger Federer in the French Open final. On top of that, Fernando Alonso drove to the Formula One British Grand Prix title this weekend. Could we add a third trophy to this photo next month?

The latest notes:
- Luis Aragones is at it again. Aragones was captured on television scolding goalkeeper Santiago Canizares during training. When questioned about the incident, both Canizares and Aragones insisted it was a joke and there shouldn’t be anything made of it.
- The whispers out of Spain camp make it sound like Raul will not be in the starting 11 for the Ukraine match. David Villa, Luis Garcia and Fernando Torres formed a three-man attack during a Sunday training session.
- Andriy Shevchenko may miss the Spain-Ukraine match afterall. A decision on his involvement in the match may not be made until one hour before kickoff.

Yes! We sure saw that in Euro2004! Where was Spain ? ;) Your arrogance has always been your weakness in the European and World Cup Finals my friend. You always think Spain is better, Spain is going to win and then we see what happens.

Portuguese fans talking down Spain? What’s up with that? Inferiority complex?

Actually, people are always expecting Spain to choke, not win. Unfortunately, La Seleccion have all too often proven them right - but they might actually get their shit together this time, so I wouldn’t beat my chest too loudly, PF. We’ll see how far Spain and Portugal go in this tourney.

Morientes didn’t make the squad, but I don’t see how you sit Raul now. He scored in the last friendly and he looked better than Villa did the game before. But maybe that was a fluke. I can live with Villa.

Just get me those damn goals - and get me plenty of them!

I start Torres as the sole pure striker out there and have Joaquin and Reyes feed in from the wings. Neither Raul nor Villa belong on the pitch at the start.

I want lots of goals too, but I’ll take 1-0 on Wednesday!!!

Well, Spain was actually the last team to arrive in Germany for the World Cup. They had to play a final warm-up game against Crotia in Switzerland on Wednesday. The Croatians left for Germany immediately after.

And as its said in Matthew 19:30 - “But many [that are] first shall be last; and the last [shall be] first.”

Could it finally be? Spain arrived last in Germany for the World Cup, and shall end the tournament in first place?? ;)

Funny Andriy, but the same website says Spain arrived last.

http://soccernet.espn.go.com/columns/story?id=370727&root=worldcup&lpos=spotlight&lid=tab1pos2&cc=4716

But no matter, as long as they finish first. Or even second… *sigh*

My hopes are to see Spain overpower their opponents in group H, but I really think they’ll squeek into the next round. its been close for all teams in all the opening matches, and for Spain it will be no different. For you Portuguese, get a life.
