Fabregas & Raul might start for Spain
Spanish bench-warmers Raul Gonzales and Cesc Fabergas are possible starters for Spain in their round of 16 clash with France on June 27th in Hannover. Fabregas managed to impress in the game against Tunisia, setting up 2 goals and avoiding another yellow card against Saudi Arabia. Raul is player who can dazzle (remember Real Madrid vs. Man U a couple of years ago, 2 goal out of 2 chances), but one that can also fizzle out. He’s no Alan Shearer for sure, but his goal against Tunisia showed he’s still got the ‘cojones’.
France vs. Spain should be a cracker, with both teams having good attacking players, and each suggesting they can play good football.

France is still a country? I’ve read about them in history books of course… but haven’t heard anything about them lately…except something about ‘youths’ burning cars or some such… too bad they don’t speak Spanish or they would know how to say VIVA LA RECONQUISTA!

Minhoca, la reconquista de que? de nada amigo! Spain has nothing to reconquer, at least not in footbal since thay have never won anything, by the way, happy birthday spanish boys, today 22 years ago france won 2-0 against spain in the euro final…too bad you can’t speak French otherwise you could have said A nous la reconquete! which we CAN say since we won it b4!

Julian,
I have great respect for the French team and what they have accomplished, truly. I do not hate France or hold any grudges of any kind. Zidane is one of the greatest of all time, and the rest of the team is loaded with talent.
However, I am pleased that Spain is playing them as I believe France’s time is past. This will be a great opportunity for Spain to finally earn it’s time in the sun, against a proven European powerhouse.
Let me try to spell it out for you:
1.) The *average* age of the French defenders is 27.875, or 28 years. Your midfield is even older. Spain’s defenders? 26.25 or 26 years. Spain’s forwards? 23.25 or 23 years. Advantage: Spain
2.) France have failed to score goals with Henry up front in the 4-5-1, as his frequent positioning down the left wing means that no one is putting pressure on the defenders in the centre. Number of French goals this tournament? 3. Number of Spanish goals? 8. Bear in mind we played our *bench* against Saudi Arabia.
3.) Our midfield is superior to France’s and might be the best in the world. Zidane is all you got. He will need to find the form of 1998 to lead this team to victory, as your whole offense revolves around him.
4.) If you know anything about futbol, you know that heart and desire count for a lot.
You think the French will win? Fine. We shall see…

Can someone answer this question? ok France sucks, ok they are old, why did Madrid want to keep Makelele than 31 at any cost? and when he left they failed to reach an Agreementto buy Vierra 29 last year who went to Italy.
Isn’t there a French player by the name of Guly 30 who started for Barcelona in the league champion finals who did not make the French squad?
I beleive there is also a guy called Pires who is 33 Villareal just bough him, why would they do that? 33 that’s ancient.
Real Madrid asked Zidane to finish his contact at the end they let him go but it was not easy, actually Spain loves him.
Laurent Blance was 32 when Barcelona Signed him a few years ago, these are all facts
if age is so important why do Spanish teams love to buy or want to keep French old players?
I guess in 94 Roger Milla of Cameroon got lucky when he scored scored quiet a few goals for his team at the pre historic age of 42 in the 94 World Cup.
Did Pele not score his 1000 goal at 33?
There is also a player maybe you guys heard of him Diego Maradona who played awsome in the USA world cup at 33 he was band for taking a substance that keeps your weight down called Efedra, legal in Europe.
Spain/France 84 European Finals that Spain lost average age 29 but that probably old too
TERRY USA

Terry,
I’m not so sure the age factor will prove decisive, but it could contribute to the results. Zidane might have a great game - but so far he’s done nothing but slow the French down.
Btw, I don’t think anyone here said that France sucks. It is undeniable that they are in decline, however. Can you seriously argue they have played well the last two years? Did the first round inspire such confidence in them? I think they’re just happy not to be home right now.
I’m not saying they can’t beat Spain - of course they can. I’m simply stating that I don’t think they will. Today will show that the clock has caught up on them, and so has Spain.
If I’m wrong, I’ll be the first to congratulate the French and eat my humble paella. But I don’t think I’ll have to. I don’t think so at all.

Roland
I totally agree with you, Zidane does slow the team, yes France playes like …. so does Italy and England yet the find a way to win, look at this web http://www.eurosport.com France expects to win the world cup they are not happy the way the got to the 2nd round every thing everyone is saying they are aware of it, if Spain wins people will say they beat a team of old men but if the loose what a disgrace
Spain a better team? probably but a declining OLD Germany did make it to the finals last world cup, this year Italy tied the USA though they should have lost, Australia got robbed yiesterday, Ivory Coast gave trouble to all the teams they played probably one of the best teams in the tournement I am sorry they are out, great soccer from them.
I guess maybe I am wrong, not always the best teams wins.
Sice everyone out there can forecast the future can I please have this week lottery numbers, thanks.
I am not French and don’t care who wins I love soccer, Spain is a good team no doubt but world champions? you need more than talent, look at Ronaldo today fat, does not run and boom a awsome goal, great things happen
One more note no one has answered my question why do Spanish teams love French players?

If france can beat Spain with one striker up front even if it is Henry then I’ll eat frogs legs!! Nevertheless if spain give them too much respect then they will sit back and defend too much and it will be goalless and we could see another swiss vs ukraine match which we dont want. All Spain gotta do is play their attacking game the way they did against ukraine and bye bye France.

Terry, La Liga loves players from everywhere. If you want to read that as French superiority, who am I to disabuse you of that notion?
I’ll leave it to La Seleccion to do that.

I am going to agree with Terry on that one. Spain was awfully overrated.
4-0 win against Ukraine. Cool. Wow. Good futbol (or maybe it was Ukraine who was only trying to find themselves, they are in 1.4 afterall). Tunisia? Yeah that was allright too (Probably 2nd weakiest team of the tournament). Saudis? No comment.
I also must admit, that I haven’t seen such arrogance from any other fans as I have seen from spanish. Perhaps this was exactly what killed you afterall. And same story goes on, I have seen exactly same thing back in 94.
You have amazing team. Amazing players. But there’s something that just gets in the way every time. You really need to figure out what it is.
And one more thing. About people from Thaliand, China etc. You people need to learn to appreciate any futbol, not just futbol from famous teams. Because frankly your comments are tiresome.

Arrogance? The spanish fans? What do you mean with that? I think spain has great fans and the players are really good. They need more expirience though, and better luck with the referees (sp?) (Arbitros in spanish)..

Hello, I’ m French and I’d like to say that the behaviour of the spanish fans was scandalous…During our national anthem, they whistled and it’s such a good feeling to beat such arrogance and this missing respect for great players as Zidane and others that helped Madrid to win Champion’s League like Makelele…Espana a casa y Zidane campeon en alemania !!!!!
great ending…
Remember that we still have players that have been WORLD CHAMPIONS…
what if we were again ??
“Come on fatherland’s children, glory day has come” some words of our national anthem…maybe 9th of July !!!
