Lack of Talent? Spain’s starting XI

January 23rd, 2006 | By: Finnegan | 2 Comments »

So in my past post I explored the idea about a maldicion on Spain that has not allowed it to advance past the quarterfinals in the WC.

A few readers chimed in and basically said “Spanish league football is great because they buy great players from around the world. Spanish talent is overated”.

Let’s ask that question – Is Spanish talented overated?

Let’s take a look at the squad Luis Aragonés called up for an informal get together in mid-December, which should form the basis for the final squad of 23:

Goalkeepers: Valdés (Barcelona), Casillas (Real Madrid), Reina (Liverpool);
Defenders: Antonio López and Pablo (Atlético Madrid), Oleguer and Puyol (Barcelona), Juanito (Betis), Del Horno (Chelsea), Capdevila (Deportivo), Iván Helguera, Michel Salgado and Sergio Ramos (Real Madrid), Marchena (Valencia);
Midfielders: Cesc (Arsenal), Iniesta and Xavi (Barcelona), Joaquín (Betis), Valerón (Deportivo), De la Peña (Espanyol), Luis García and Xabi Alonso (Liverpool), Guti (Real Madrid), Albelda, Baraja and Vicente (Valencia), Marcos Senna (Villarreal);
Forwards: Reyes (Arsenal), Fernando Torres (Atlético Madrid), Munitis (Deportivo), Morientes (Liverpool), Raúl (Real Madrid), David Villa (Valencia).

There is some serious talent in that group with some up an coming youngsters like Cesc Fábregas, Iniesta y Oleguer, as well as Brazilian born Marcos Senna who have never been in a national team camp.

But do they have what it takes to get past the quarterfinals or even out of their group?

If the opening match were tomorrow who would you have in your squad (assuming all are healthy)?

Who would I put out there? How does this look:

Casillas

Carlos Puyol, Michel Salgado, Pablo, Del Horno,

Xabi Alonso, Guti, Luis García, Jose Antotnio Reyes ,

Fernando Torres, Morrientes

Notice a theme in my lineup? What would be your starting XI?

The spanish lineup does not strike fear in me. I think they will choke again and that ukraine and tunisia will advance from their group. By the way, if Spain is so good than how come there is talk of Mariano Pernia playing for them. The guy has never come close to playing for his birth country Argentina.

Hello, sorry because my english sucks. Spain’s starting XI:
Casillas (He and Buffon the best goalkeepers)
Salgado, Puyol(one of the best defenders), Sergio Ramos, Del Horno
Joaquín, Xabi Alonso, Guti, Vicente or Reyes
Fernando Torres, David Villa (great striker)

Raúl, Xavi and Valerón injuried

Great Team
