May 2nd, 2006 | By: Ian | 1 Comment »

Luis Aragones will not release his World Cup squad for another 14 days, but Marca is reporting that 22 of the 23 spots in Spain’s squad are already certain.

According to Marca:
Goalkeepers: Iker Casillas, Pepe Reina, Santiago Canizares
Defenders: Michel Salgado, Sergio Ramos, Puyol, Juanito, Pablo, Marchena, Antonio López and Mariano Pernía
Midfielders: Xavi, Xabi Alonso, Cesc Fabregas, Marcos Senna, David Albelda, Jose Antonio Reyes and Luis Garcia
Forwards: Raúl, Fernando Torres, David Villa and Fernando Morientes

Who is in contention for the last place? Joaquin, Vicente, Jaime Gavilan, Ruben Baraja and Ivan De La Pena.

The fact that neither Joaquin or Vicente have been named to the squad will come as a surprise to many.

No Joaquin or Vicente??? No Way! Well if Vicente can’t recover in time for the World Cup it makes sense to take Reyes over him. So I won’t be suprised not to see his inclusion. However, Joaquin has got to be there he is simply brilliant everytime he puts on the Red Jersey. The other candidates simply do not deserve a spot. De La Pena hasn’t done anything special this season and has no WC expierience. If we we’re to take an AM with little expierence why not take Cani? Gavilan is one for the future IMO. As for Baraja Spain has got a breadth of players who can do what he do alot better.
