Pre-squad announced

April 7th, 2006 | By: Ian | 9 Comments »

Luis Aragones has announced his 33-man pre-squad for a “get-together” in Madrid. Five new faces are on the list.

Who’s missing? Ivan Helguera (deservedly so), Guti (odd man out).

It would be a big surprise if any of the five new faces (Gavilan, Oubina, Melli, Cani, Venta), made the World Cup.

Full squad:

Goalkeepers: Iker Casillas (Real Madrid), Pepe Reina (Liverpool), Santiago Canizares (Valencia)

Defenders: Antonio Lopez (Atletico Madrid), Pablo Ibanez (Atletico Madrid), Carles Puyol (Barcelona), Juanito (Real Betis), Melli (Real Betis), Asier del Horno (Chelsea), Joan Capdevila (Deportivo Coruna), Michel Salgado (Real Madrid), Sergio Ramos (Real Madrid), Carlos Marchena (Valencia), Javi Venta (Villarreal)

Midfielders: Cesc Fabregas (Arsenal), Jose Antonio Reyes (Arsenal), Andres Iniesta (Barcelona), Xavi (Barcelona), Joaquin (Real Betis), Borja Oubina (Celta Vigo), Ivan de la Pena (Espanyol), Jaime Gavilan (Getafe), Luis Garcia (Liverpool), Xabi Alonso (Liverpool), David Albelda (Valencia), Ruben Baraja (Valencia), Vicente (Valencia), Marcos Senna (Villarreal), Cani (Real Zaragoza)

Forwards: Fernando Torres (Atletico Madrid), Fernando Morientes (Liverpool), Raul (Real Madrid), David Villa (Valencia)

Spain isn’t going to be itself for the tournament I think and should have a big tournament. They were unfortunate to have lost to South Korea. They probably would have beaten Germany to play Brazil in the final.

I don’t get why he did not call Guti. I see him as one of the most talented spanish midfield. Any special reason about why he’s out?

I dont understand why they didn’t call Guti, and they call Jaime Gavilan (Getafe), who is he… Is this the final team, or can he call guti on a later stage…

I think Spain has a surplus of midfielders — there are so many who are of top quality.

But I agree.. Gavilan and a couple other newcomers over Guti is strange. This is not the final team and he could call Guti up anyway before the May 15 deadline, but I don’t see how that could possibly happen if he’s not on a 33-man list (that still needs to be trimmed to 23) of players invited to a get-together.
