Second Unit Given Chance to Shine against Saudis

June 22nd, 2006 | By: WC Bob | 6 Comments »

With coach Aragones unconcerned about the next round opponent, he is going to give his reserve players a chance to play against Saudi Arabia and I can’t blame him. Canizares is likely to make the start in goal and a guy like Inesta is hoping that some minutes in a largely meaningless game will translate into future playing time.

We’ll also see Raul for at least 45 minutes as he seeks to score one more goal to become Spain’s all-time leading scorer in the World Cup.

Here’s a look at the probable teams:

Saudi Arabia (4-5-1):

1-Mohamed Al Deayea (181-0); 2-Ahmed Dokhi (70-4), 13-Hussein Sulaimani (99-3), 4-Hamad Al Montashari (34-6), 3-Redha Tuker (39-6); 14-Saud Al Khariri (36-12), 6-Omar Al Ghamdi (40-5), 8-Mohamed Noor (65-22), 9-Sami Al Jaber (162-44), 16-Khaled Al Thaker (16-2); 20-Yassir Al Qahtani (45-33)

Coach: Marcos Paqueta

Spain (4-3-3):

19-Santiago Canizares (45-0); 2-Michel Salgado (50-0), 20-Juanito (15-1), 4-Carlos Marchena (27-1), 12-Antonio Lopez (10-1); 6-David Albelda (34-0), 13-Andres Iniesta (3-0), 18-Cesc Fabregas (6-0); 17-Joaquin (39-4), 10-Jose Antonio Reyes (19-4), 7-Raul (97-44)

Coach: Luis Aragones

I would rather see him use Cesc sparingly as he’s coming into this match with a booking. Then hopefully insert Cesc into the starting line up for the knock out phase. Cesc, Xabi, Xavi and Reyes … 4 - 4 - 2 please.

Still looks a decent side that can and will defeat the saudis by a good few goals. Though I wouldnt use cesc for the full 90mins. I would still let torres or villa have a run about during the second half say after 70mins when the game is pretty much already won cos I dont think Raul has a full 90 mins in his legs.
