Spain 0, Russia 0

May 28th, 2006 | By: Ian | 3 Comments »

It was a disappointing 0-0 draw for Spain against Russia yesterday in Albacete. With limited forward options, concern is growing for the team’s ability to score goals at this year’s World Cup, despite Luis Aragones using a 4-3-3 formation.

Other notes:
- Spain now has a 20-match unbeaten streak.
- We saw 17 different players against Russia and no combination could produce a goal. The starting 11 combination of David Villa, Fernando Torres and Luis Garcia created the best opportunities, however.
- Pablo Ibanez and Andres Iniesta were both born in Albacete and received plenty of fan support.

Ignore Spain at your peril. They are due a World Cup run and yes perhaps there should less empahasis on foreign players and more home grown talent however there are lots of Spanish players outwith Barcelona, Real Madrid & Valencia who are more than capable of playing in the World Cup and performing at the highest level. As a Scot who spends as much time in Spain as I possibly can I shall be supporting them. Viva Espana.
