SPAIN 4, UKRAINE 0 – June 14

GOAL 13th

GOAL 17th

GOAL 48th

GOAL 81ST

What a performance! Perhaps the most impressive display of football in the World Cup thus far.
First half: Xabi Alonso headed home a Xavi corner kick to give Spain the lead. Then David Villa scored his first on a free kick which deflected off a Ukraine player’s head to throw off the goalkeeper. After Spain scored two early goals, there was no coming back for Ukraine. Especially not in the blazing heat in Leipzig. Fernando Torres and David Villa stared down Ukraine defenders and took them on — something we had not seen in the warm-up friendlies.
Second half: Not that Spain needed it, but it got a little help from the referee on the red card and penalty kick in the 47th minute. Villa slotted home the PK to stretch the lead to 3-0. But the goal of the day belonged to Fernando Torres and a brilliant header pass from Carles Puyol. Puyol’s soft touch with his head hit Torres on the run and he finished with a perfect goal.
What we learned: 1. Spain is incredibly dangerous from set pieces. 2. This team has the best first touch of any team in the World Cup I’ve seen thus far — some of the passing in tight spaces in the first half had to make you shake your head. 3. This was supposed to be Spain’s toughest test of the first round. Clearly, this team is going to be oozing confidence when it moves on to the knockout rounds.

Spain is having the best midfield in the tournament. Yesturday, display was spectacular in all departments.

Let’s hope the same continues till July 9th.

No Sandy, wait until Brasil meets Spain! They sucked so much in the first game you would never say they are the champions.

GO SPAIN!

Aupa España !! There is not an ounce of luck in a 4-0 result … Red card/penalty was a bad call, but by far the best game in World Cup 2006 thus far (4th goal was a beauty). Confidence is high and we will probably be seing great things from “la seleccion”.

Hey Guys,

I love Barca too. But it’s not all about the Spaniards there, right? Puyol probably wouldn’t even say he’s Spanish – he’s Catalan dammit. Ha ha ha!

Without a Dutchman at the helm, more than a small share of Brazilians, and a Cameroonian forward, where would Barca be? Not the Champions League winner probably. This is how all the big clubs work, of course.

Just don’t take Barca’s success to translate immediately into success for the Furia Roja.

Spain has argueably the best soccer league in the world ( definitly in the top 3 ). So why then would Spain not be considered as a cup contender? We see the youth, the skill, and will to compete and win ( now 23 games without a loss). Spain will wake up those ignorant to admit, that they are a soccer nation.

def, I sincerely hope that “1 0″ is merely a tally of the matches that Spain and Ukraine have played against each other so far. Is it?

From the general comments it´s obvious that there is a positive confidence in this team.
But from the past disappointments we have suffered, I think the players should behave in a wise way after this start, but believing they can win.
I am afraid that the spanish worst enemy is the psychological factor. I mean, I believe they would be too strained against tough opponents such as Brazil, England or Italy, for instance. The fear to win these teams would prevent them from displaying the cool game they know. I wish I was wrong.

Fuerza, España!!!
