Spain to beat Brazil?

April 18th, 2006 | By: Ian | 4 Comments »

Historically, there’s been a roadblock in Spain’s path to the World Cup. Never has Spain advanced past the quarterfinals. But this year, Luis Aragones is confident that will all change.

Hello? Luis? AP? You forgot to mention one small thing. A potential quarterfinal opponent for Spain is Brazil.

Take a look at Spain’s potential second round opponents if Spain wins its group: France, Korea, Togo, Switzerland. In my opinion, all those teams are beatable.

Potential quarterfinal opponents (again, assuming Spain wins its group): Brazil, Croatia, Australia, Japan, Italy, Ghana, Czech Republic, United States.

Brazil-Spain, Italy-Spain, those are the kind of dream match-ups you typically get in the quarterfinals. And I may be accused of having one too many Heinekens for saying this, but on a sub-par day for Brazil and a good day for Spain, La Furia Roja could find itself in the semifinals.

In the 2002 i was hoping to watch a final between Spain vs Brazil. I didn’t think Germany had the team to go that far. Unfortunely Spain was eliminated by the referee.. er… i mean Korea. So I look foward to this game in Germany. I don’t remember the last time i saw those teams playing.

I also remember that match in 1994 with Luis Enrique (it was him, right) getting the nose broken by an italian player and then there wasn’t even a foul, or something like that…

Seems you guys have been robbed (shouldn’t say this) at least twice (94 and 02).

Pitty also the EC 04. I’d have prefered Spain and Portugal to go through, rather than Greece.

Spain is a difficult side to play against, it normally gets eliminated by no more than one goal or by penalty kicks, therefore, Spain vs. Brazil should be a close match where referee decisions and luck are crucial.
Spain last played Brazil in 1986 World Cup, losing 1-0 but had a ‘legal’ goal disallowed…

To beat Brazil you got to be able to keep the ball away from them. Spain has just the kind of Arsenal to do that in guys like Xavi, Xabi Alonso, Baraja, Albelda, and Cesc to a lesser extent. They’ll definitley have a chance….

My bet on World Cup

[...] Brazil will defeat Germany in the finals with a small 2:1. I said that a few days ago and I’m still pretty sure. … What do you think? [...]
