Spain vs. Saudi Arabia

June 23rd, 2006 | By: Nick O'Neill | 18 Comments »

Spain is fielding its reserve team today against Saudi Arabia. Coach Aragones feels its time to blood his youngsters and the Saudi’s should provide some shooting practice. Already leading Group H with 6 points and a goal difference of +6, the Spanish are sitting pretty. Even if second place team Ukraine (3 points, goal difference 0) get 3 more points against Tunisia, there is little chance of Spain losing its 1st place spot.

Aragones will be starting Arsenal midfield Cesc Fabregas, and plans to use him the whole game. I’ve always said he is Spain’s best player and regularly puts in great performances for Arsenal. Not a flashy player, Fabregas provides stability and tenacity in midfield. He can pass and also score.

Prediction: Spain have too much class for Saudi, 3-0.

You are very conservative in your prediction. I imagine 7:0 for Spain.

1-0 final score so not much class shown. But spain didnt need to show any class so it was a fair result.

Referee also missed a penalty shot call for Raul in the first half and for Torres in the second; but that was nothing compared to the officiating in the Ukraine-Tunisia match, apparently.

i wanted a blow-out game but i wasnt expecting one.. kinda disappointed with the team’s performance but at least they got a win, some players did stand out, Joaquin for example had a couple of fantastic runs and pretty good shots on goal too bad they didnt turn into points for the Furia..

I think it was a question of the reserves not having a good feeling of each other out there on the pitch. We saw more of an individual style of attacking in the 2nd half.

Fabregas and Reyes should have both earned themselves a starting spot with their performances in the first half.

We got france in the next round and from their performance against togo we dont have to worry about anything. Truth is I would have preferred france over switzerland cos theyre playing well.

The Swiss have not allowed a goal and shouldn’t be taken lightly. I’m glad we drew the French but they seem to have gotten their act together as far as the line up is concerned and should be up for a good match on the 27th. Still, I don’t see them beating LA FURIA! Especially if Cesc makes his way to the starting line up as he should after his solid performance up to now.

It’s been a lot of fun till now,but This is where it all begins. I’m confident to see Spain through, but, but history begs to differ. Anxiouty’s kicking in. I hope to see the boy’s have their way, as they should.

Quique has posted some very odd scorelines. In my opinion Brazil will face Spain in 1/4s and Spain will beat them 2-1. But Ghana could be the surprise package at this tourney. Your right about Italy though, the aussies will beat them easily.

BTW as I’ve said b4, history don’t count for squat in tourneys. Just looking at what greece did at euro 2004 can tell you that anything can happen and if Spain go out their and fight like its a war and are prepared to give their all to win then no doubt they will win.

Although they played their non-starters, the ones who did start were very good (ie Raul). In fact, Torres came in later on, and he couldn’t get anything going for the team.

Saudi played badly in the 1st half, but came out on the attack in the second. Zayed was amazing…he has 29 saves for the tournament; T-3 so far. Too bad he won’t be adding more.

There’s always next time I guess.
