Amazing News for La Furia Roja

March 2nd, 2009 | By: Anthony | 5 Comments »

No, Sergio Agüero’s son isn’t going to play for us. Something even better… Our “prodigal son” better known as “I’ve never won anything” or simply Raúl has said he plans to retire in 2011.

In an interview with The Associated Press Raúl said that he is planning to play for Real Madrid until 2011 and then either do one of two things – retire or play in the MLS.

Yes.. The MLS.

So why do I care so much about this “legend’s” retirement? Well its simple. I’m hoping by him coming out and saying this that it now eliminates all chances of him ever returning to La Furia Roja.

First of all surely Vicente del Bosque will want to choose players that will be a part of the squad’s long-term plans rather than just a couple one game wonders. Not only that but also anyone knows that any good MLS players have no chance of cracking European international squads. Just ask Mr. Beckham because we all know how long he lasted at the Galaxy.

Everyone who has read any of my previous posts on this matter knows my stance on the matter and this article probably emphasizes it even further.

I don’t have anything against the man because of anything in particular I’m just extremely concerned with my country and bringing him back would be a step in the wrong direction.

Better Candidates for the Job:

Bojan – Despite the kid’s lack of a role at Barça this season he is young. Young talent can’t be denied and not giving this kid the proper experience will be a huge mistake. He has a keen eye for goal and was one of Barcelona’s standout young performers last season.

Mata – Has by far been Valencia’s most consistent performer this season in a most inconstant season. He’s young, hungry, and has a habit of getting extremely clutch goals in the most vital moments of matches. Not that it’s a bad thing at all, in fact we may need someone like him considering he can play up top of just behind the striker. He would be a solid addition alongside David Villa because of course they know each other from the club level or even just behind the two strikers playing in an centre forward role.

Xisco – The Spanish U-21 international was a huge hit at Deportivo la Coruña until making a huge mistake by moving to Newcastle of the English Premier League. The crisis club of England has basically ruined his young career, playing the kid only 5 times this whole season and only debuting once. Ever since moving to the Tyneside he’s only scored 1 goal, pretty embarrassing considering he scored 12 in 44 substitute appearances for Depor and 13 in 27 matches for UD Vecindario who play in the Spanish Segunda B.

All these players have serious potential and age on their side, something Raúl doesn’t have. Like I said, I don’t have anything against him and I can’t deny his records as they are the utmost impressive but those are all in the past now and we have to look for the future.

Do you think Raul will get a testimonial type game? One last appearance to say goodbye?

Daryl, there are rumours of it happening in October or November sometime as a part of the RFEF’s centenary year celebration. The match is most likely going to be against Argentina at the Bernabeú furthering speculation of whether Raúl will play or not.

For some reason, I don’t think Bojan’s going to make it. It’s an odd feeling and pretty irrational but I doubt he will become as big of a star as people would once have projected.

I was thinking the same thing recently Alex seeing as his Barça career has kinda flopped of late but I guess time will only tell. There was a lot of hype before but of late he’s been pretty ordinary. I don’t think he’s getting the opportunity at Barça to succeed, he needs to go to a team where he can get some playing time.

Hey, happy to see the new post! I have to be quick, so I’ll say that Villa was the most consistent on Valencia this year (19 goals as 2nd top scorer is great, especially with the condition Valencia is in now) but Mata definitely was too. Its very unfortunate that Valencia had to be the way it is this year. I think if Valencia had a better environment, Mata could be doing even better. I don’t like Bojan much, and I don’t think he’ll become a star like some people are saying, as Alex said. I see Mata and Jesus Navas becoming real stars, but not Bojan. I’ll write some more later!
