RIP Puerta
Morning blog readers, it’s a lovely sunny day here.
Spain is currently in shock over the sudden death of Antonio Puerta, a player who was almost sure to be destined for greatness. Helping Sevilla to two UEFA Cups as well as the Kings Cup in the last few years, Puerta was not just a brilliant player on the pitch but a great person off it. When he collapsed on the pitch during a league game against Getafe, most put it down to tiredness. Sadly he passed away in hospital on August 28th, 2007, putting the football world into a state of shock and sadness. I’d like to take this moment to remind everyone that there are a lot more important things that football and who your club may or not be signing- remember Puerta, remember who he was- that’s all I ask of you. A tribute match between Sevilla and AC Milan went off without a hitch, both teams wearing shirts with Puerta’s name on the back. AC Milan ran out 3-1 winners- Renato netting for the Spanish side while Inzaghi, Kaka and Jankulovski scored for Milan.
La Liga started last weekend of course, the biggest surprise being the Fantastic Four of Barcelona being held to a draw by lowly Racing Santander. Real Madrid, Villareal, and Sevilla all were victorious while the former two teams will play each other this weekend. Last week also saw the close of the transfer window, a window during which star player Ronaldinho was repeatedly linked to English big-spenders Chelsea. Talk is that he will move there at the end of this season, how true that story turns out to be is unknown yet. Today’s fixtures include Athletic Bilbao visiting the Nou Camp, as well as a tasty match between Real Betis and Espanyol.
With that, I’ll sign off although will start the regular blogging now that La Liga has restarted.
