Spain

Liechtenstein 0 – Spain 4, or, The Kid is Back!

It is wonderful to see Fernando Torres scoring goals again, as I’m sure Liverpool fans will agree, and that’s what we got to see yesterday as La Roja managed a convincing win over Liechtenstein for their first qualifying match for Euro 2012.

What a Deadly Duo they make...

What a Deadly Duo they make...

Both of our Davids (Villa and Silva) got a goal each to complete the scoreline, plus everyone had a host of missed opportunities that, if the Spain players had been any more accurate or the Liechtenstein keeper less agile, would have made it a true carnage (and not what the front page wants to pass off as ‘bullying’).

See the highlights of the match under the jump!

There isn’t much to say about this match, as it followed faithfully the script of all the good Spain matches we’ve all seen so far, with the added advantage that Liechtenstein barely had two or three real shots on goal (and thus, Marchena was not forced to reveal his true cyborg nature). Let me just give a shout to El Niño Torres for finding his way back to the goal, for David Villa for nearly equaling Raúl goalscoring-record with La Roja (according to the RFEF, the first goal against Poland here was given to Villa, and then, due to the press’ complaints, it wasn’t, so he’s at 43 to Raúl’s 44, with 36 games less played), to Andrés Iniesta for being, as usual, extremely good, to Iker Casillas for a surprisingly apt one-on-one save in what was Liechtenstein best chance, and to Gerard Piqué for being comically determined to score, for some reason (to be fair, he had a pretty good chance once).

The other match in this group, Lithuania-Scotland, finished with a goalless draw, so Spain is already group leader, with 3 points and a +4 goal average. This, along with the U-21s victory over The Netherlands, makes this a pretty good international week for Spanish football, and fills us with confidence for the Argentina-Spain friendly next week!

So, what did you think?

Liechtenstein weren't bad for a team mainly mad up of part timers. When I heard about David Villa scoring, I was happy to think he had equalled raul, then when one of his goals wasn't awarded to him, I thought it doesn't matter it is only a matter of time until you become the all time top goal scorer for Spain and solidify your footballing legacy as one one of the all time greats.

It would've been such a wonderful strike for Villa to tie Raul's record too. No matter, he'll break the record tally soon enough and begin raising the bar for future Spaniards to shoot for. :)

Beating a small team like Liechtenstein isn't much to celebrate about but is nevertheless a good start. ( At least not another Swiss upset! ). With consistency and a healthy dose of luck, Spain should have a good shot at retaining the Euro trophy.

Spain just make it look so easy. This was the only highlight of my day since I had to put my ill kitten down that day(his name was Xavi, yes I named him after Xavi and I adored him so much). I feel we can (must) definately beat Argentina but it will be a much closer game. VIVA ESPANA!

Oh and I soo happy to see Torres back on the score board! I was actually concerned for a minute that his career would just start to go downhill after the world cup. Well, he had just been operated on before the world cup. I personally feel the score will be 3-2 for Spain against Argentina on Tuesday.
