Pepe Reina has a good day at the office…
… and if someone needed at good day at the office, it was Pepe Reina, after his unfortunate mistake in the friendly against Argentina.
But lo and behold, he put that behind him and gave a truly wonderful performance in Liverpool’s otherwise lackluster 0-0 draw against Birmingham this weekend. In case you had forgotten why Mr Reina is La Roja’s second goalkeeper, sit and watch.
In other news, FIFA released today its updated rankings. And surprise surprise? No surprise. Spain is still first, ahead of World Cup runners-up (and kung-fu maestros) Netherlands, who are followed by Germany, Brazil and Argentina to complete the Top Five.
La Roja, at the top of the 'world football's pecking order'...
And lastly, let us have some injury news. You want the good news, or the bad news first? Nevermind, I’ll give you the good news. Carles Puyol, who Piqué and the rest of us missed so badly in Argentina, is back in shape, as he demonstrated as Barcelona beat Panathinaikos 5-1 in their first Champions League match (it is no coincidence that when he was absent, Barça lost 0-2 to a recently promoted team). The bad news is that Sergio Ramos had to retire from Real Madrid’s training ahead of their Champions League match against Ajax with calf pain; luckily, he’s just tweeted, “Hi friends, the resonance ruled out a (muscular) tear and I hope to be there for next match”, so we and Vicente del Bosque can rest at ease about La Roja’s defence for their next match, which will be on October 8th against Lithuania.
