Newsflash: Del Bosque’s preliminary squad, or, We Told You So!

“‘The time has come’, the Walrus said, ‘to talk of many things…’”

In this case, of the 30 men who now have a very real chance to make part of that exclusive list of 23 who will travel to South Africa to represent La Furia Roja.

Please don't tell me you don't see the resemblance.

Please don't tell me you don't see the resemblance.

Del Bosque has spoken, and he has spoken like a true politician. Doubts about the strikers? Try all options. The goalkeeper debate? Easy, he calls up five goalies. Young’uns vs Oldies? He calls them both up. New faces? Why not?!

But enough boasting about how awesome we are and how you should ask us for lottery numbers. Here is the list:

Goalkeepers:

Iker Casillas (Real Madrid)
Pepe Reina (Liverpool FC)
Diego López (Villarreal FC)
Víctor Valdés (FC Barcelona)
David De Gea (Atlético de Madrid)

Defenders:

Sergio Ramos (Real Madrid)
Raúl Albiol (Real Madrid)
Álvaro Arbeloa (Real Madrid)
Gerard Piqué (FC Barcelona)
Carles Puyol (FC Barcelona)
Carlos Marchena (Valencia CF)
Joan Capdevila (Villarreal CF)
César Azpilicueta (Osasuna)

Midfielders:

Xabi Alonso (Real Madrid)
Sergi Busquets (FC Barcelona)
Xavi Hernández (FC Barcelona)
Andrés Iniesta (FC Barcelona)
David Silva (Valencia CF)
Juan Mata (Valencia CF)
Marcos Senna (Villarreal CF)
Cesc Fábregas (Arsenal)
Javi Martínez (Athletic de Bilbao)
Jesús Navas (Sevilla FC)
Santi Cazorla (Villarreal CF)

Strikers:

David Villa (Valencia CF)
Álvaro Negredo (Sevilla FC)
Fernando Torres (Liverpool)
Dani Güiza (Fenerbahce)
Fernando Llorente (Athletic de Bilbao)
Pedro Rodríguez (FC Barcelona)

*players in italics had never been called up.

Culés can celebrate that Víctor Valdés has finally made the list, any sort of list. The Javi Martínez fans (you know who you are) can gleefully point out that I was wrong in writing him off. Those suffering souls that support Atlético de Madrid can be proud of seeing young David De Gea mentioned here. Osasuna followers have César Azpilicueta to boast of. There’s something for everyone!

We’ll do a more in-depth analysis of this list once we’ve had time to dust off our crystal ball and adopt a suitable mystic tone of voice. In the meanwhile, it’s up to you to say what you think of this list, who you think is missing (personally, I think Valencia’s Pablo Hernández), and who should be one of those unfortunate seven who stay home in the end (I would say Javi Martínez, but I’m not allowed, am I?).

Have at it in the comments (and, should you be of the social-networking persuasion, you can also give your opinion in our Facebook page)!

first of all ADE I told you so about javi martinez you watch!Second Its nice to see a manager that calls up the majority of the best players and is not afraid of putting new faces in unlike some managers(lippi). What’s the point of calling DE gea? Surely he could have called arteta or pablo in that squad because those players deserve to get a look in the national team

  • chup

Well, the seven who should be left home are obviously:
Lopez, De Gea, Azpilicueta, Javi Martinez, Cazorla, Guiza and Llorente. The other midfielders are just too good to be dropped. He could probably pick Cazorla in place of Navas, but that’s pretty much it.

As for the strikers,Villa and Torres are indispensable. Pedro had an excellent season and would be my next choice. And I’d pick Negredo over Llorente or Guiza anytime. It’s not that their bad, but I think Negredo is better. I would have hoped to see Bojan on this list too.

  • Rod

    My dream 23 man Squad:
    GK
    Casillas
    Reina
    Valdes
    Def
    Puyol
    Capdevilla(unfortunately)
    Ramos
    Pique
    Albiol
    Arbeloa
    Marchena
    Mid
    Xabi
    Xavi
    Biscuits (intentional error)
    Iniesta
    Silva
    Mata
    Cesc
    Navas
    Martinez (sorry senna)
    FW
    Torres
    Llorente
    Villa
    Pedro
I know I am gloating about martinez but he’ll probably get left out so there’s still time for you to glee Ade

  • Rod

Llorente should go over Negredo because he’s had a better season and can offer more than Negredo and he’s perfect for a navas or silva to cross the ball to because of his excellent aerial ability

  • Cameron

I feel bad for Sergio Asenjo who just a year ago was Spain’s most highly rated young keeper. A year on and he has definitively been seen put down to the second keeper behind De Gea. Of course, this past weekend he blew out his knee only after 12 minutes in a meaningless game, which means he’s out for the next six month. I think he’ll be playing his football somewhere else come January, just a horribly failed experiment on his part, unfortunately as I like the kid a lot and think he will still have a tremendous future. We will have to see though how he recovers and comes back from his injury.

  • Corey

Told you so about Javi Martinez. He will only get better in the coming years, so this is just the start.

  • Rod

Somebody comment on the omission of pablo and arteta!

  • Timothy Lakefront

As a Valencianista, I’m disappointed to see Pablito omitted. But he hasn’t had that great of a second half of the season, so he only has himself to blame. What a roster – k viva la furia roja!

  • christianloriau

Just lots of good players. Probably won’t be “a casa como siempre” as it was the last few world cups.
    Christian Loriau

  • Ade C.

I know you told me about Javi Martínez. Oh yeah, I know. You told me so. I admit it.
And I do feel it’s a shame not to have Pablo H. called up; he hasn’t had the best season, that’s true, but still, he good, young and versatile. And Arteta should get a shout-out soon, although probably is not the best thing to bring him suddenly into the NT for a World Cup.
    My 23?
Goalies: Casillas, Reina, Valdés (De Gea will have many, many opportunities in the years to come).
Defenders: Puyol, Ramos, Marchena, Piqué, Capdevila, Arbeloa… and Albiol (I’d take Azpilicueta if he had a little more international experience, but as it is, better not to risk it).
Midfielders: Xabi, Busquets, Xavi, Iniesta, Silva, Mata, Senna, Fábregas, Cazorla. (I can’t stand Navas, and he carries the risk of having a meltdown, and Martínez *still* doesn’t convince me)
Strikers: Villa, Negredo, Torres, Pedro. (I really like Negredo)

  • Rod

Ade Why Negredo? Why him over llorente?

  • Rod

with torres being injured for the first game I would like to see a 4-3-3 with villa as the lone striker or pairing him with llorente I think it would be a good partnership with villa on the ground and llorente in the air.

  • http://www.xperteleven.com Andres

I Would leave Pedro out as we already have el Guaje and Torres anything he can do they could do better , and bring in both Llorente and Negredo in case one of them fails to to live up to their target man expectation the other can step in

the Goalies for me are Casillas , Reina and Valdes

in the Midfield i would pick Martinez and Senna over Busquets maybe its the Madridista in me i dont know but they are both better than Busquets at EVERYTHING , defending /attacking you name it and they dont play act much

  • Zizou

well the guy missing for me is Guti, him and Ronaldo for Brazil are the 2 players i would have loved to see at South Afrca that aren’t.

its funny how everyone has a different opinion on Negredo and Llorente, personally i prefer Llorente.

  • Corey

Everyone is discounting Guiza, who has been a clutch player for us in the past two tournaments. His international experience outstrips Llorente and Negredo combined. Any thoughts on that?

  • Rod

Corey Guiza doesn’t have the club form that llorente has with 23 goals this season compared to 17 and plus llorente plays in a better league and as he’s a better player in all categories compared to Guiza

  • Ryan

Guiza performs his substitute role so well, but hasn’t done much at the club level since getting Pichichi and leaving Spain. It’ll have to be Llorente or Negredo to be Torres’ backup. And then you have Pedro, who ousted a fading Henry with his knack of getting goals. He certainly has experience with a possession-based team and isn’t afraid to take shots when the rest of the team can’t seem to pass the ball into the net.

I really don’t want to see Busquets’ peek-a-boo theatrics next month; let Pep work on him for a few years and let’s see if he’s better for Euro ‘12.

  • Rod

pedro is the perfect player for this team who’s national team has a history of under achievement and not being able to get to the next level and having him coming off the bench in a tight game against a brazil or Germany where he’s proven he can score at any tournament in the tightest of situation he can get a goal out of nowhere and it would be a confidence boost to the squad

  • http://www.xperteleven.com Andres

if there is one thing that La Roja arent lacking at the moment it is confidence but i trust Vicente im sure whoever he picks would do well

Re Guiza i like him as a player but given that its either him or one of Negredo or Llorente i wouldnt take him to SA

  • Zizou

what i don’t get is why he picked 5 goalies, seems like he wasted 2 spots to me, i mean you can still call up players after the 23 man squad as long as they are done 24 hours before the WC begins.

But Andres is right, you gotta trust Del Bosque.

  • Rod

he should have called up pablo or arteta even though they are not going to make the cut

  • http://real.theoffside.com/ Bassam

It is soo easy to see who the madrid and the barcelona supporters are. Barcelona supporters want Busi Valdes and Pedro all at the world cup. Madrid fans tend to exclude them. My view is, anyone with no international experience should not go to the world cup. That is why my roster includes:

    Goal Keepers:

    Casillas
    Reina
Diego Lopez (not only bcz he has one international cap, but because i think had Villarael not had him, they would have conceded much more. The 6-2 loss against Madrid is a tribute to that).

    Defenders:
    Puyol
    Capdevilla
    Ramos
    Pique
    Albiol
    Arbeloa
Marchena (had Azpilicueta had one international cap under his belt, i would pick him. Marchena is shit. Ramos can cover CB in case an injury crisis happens there)

    Midfield:

    Xabi
    Xavi
    Iniesta
    Silva
    Mata
    Cesc
    Navas
    Senna
Busi (I would take Martinez over both the aging senna and Busi, but again, the first cap is like losing your virginity. It is a big thing!)

    Attack:

    Torres
    Negredo
    Villa
Guiza (History has told us that a player without a full season or more under his belt is not a good idea in the WC. Hence no pedro.)

  • Rod

I completely disagree with you about Guiza Bassam because Pedro is the X factor in this team where he might give you a bit of an unpredictability where he might get you a goal out of nowhere in a tight game like he has done many times with Barca. But i completely agree about Busquets and senna javi Martinez any day of the week for me but Valdes has to go not because of the season he’s having but his distribution complements the team and also having the experience of working with the starting center backs everyday in barcelona (Puyol,Pique) also helps.
(By the way not a barca fan I think Pedro, valdes are the best players in form and overall.)

  • Rod

Bassam what are you talking about? Pedro has played a full season with barcelona. Could you show an example of why taking those type of players is bad to take to the world cup

  • Helge

    LOL @ the picture :D

I’m really satisfied with the Spanish line-up, it’s the only one so far who is nearly perfect (I’d have liked to see Arteta and Pablo Hernandez, but I also don’t know which player to leave out for them…).
Be that as it may, compared to the incredibly shitty line-ups called up by Lippi, Maradumba, Dunga or Dumbenech, this WC gotta be Spain’s!

  • Rod

it will be a travesty if spain does not make the final with all these weak teams around spain but Del bosque can still screw it up with selecting negredo and guiza instead of llorente and pedro

  • Corey

Guiza’s role as a super sub in the Euro and the WC Qualifying cannot be understated. Pedro has those qualities, but he has never shown it with the Spanish team as of yet. Given the likes of Mata and Jesus Navas will already be on the bench for Spain, I would have to think Pedro is a luxury to bring a long, but not really necessary. Given Torres being crocked, its likely Del Bosque plumps for one of the big guys. Both Llorente and Negredo have played well in their few games for the selection, but to me Guiza presents an experience factor no one else possesses.

  • Corey

Also, for my insight on this topic, check this out: http://www.worldcup.barnsleyblog.com/?p=102

  • Rod

But has Guiza’s experience won a game for Spain? To me he’s the guy that comes on when the game is all said and done. I would prefer to put Llorente in there because he can come in and still keep a defense on their toes and alert because of his size and aerial ability by keeping the pressure on the center backs.Corey, Pedro is a special case because of what he’s done in all the competitions with barca and always scores when the team needs it the most. For Example who would you trust to get you a goal in a tight game Pedro or Guiza? I have a feeling I don’t know why that Pedro can play a huge role in this world cup.

  • Rod

i WOULD LIKE TO SEE DURING these FRIENDLIES FOR DEL BOSQUE is to play the fringe players at the start

  • chup

Pedro has to go! He’s in the form of his life and could really exceed everyone’s expectetions at his WC. Just like he did for Barcelona. Who would have thought he would claim the spot of Henry and long time wonderkid Bojan in the team?

  • shingai

Hmmm….fans that are actually happy with their national selection? Surely that’s a bad sign for Spain!

  • shingai

Bassam…Pele didn’t have any international experience before 1958.

Either a guy can perform under pressure or he can’t. And that ability is pretty hard to predict.

    Just sayin’.

  • Corey

Rod: You clearly did not watch Euro 08. Guiza’s performances during all of the games were steringly, and he was an impact player whether the game was beyond doubt or still in the balance. The same can be said for most of the WC qualifiers. Do not let our perfect record in qualification fool you, there were several tough games in the mix. Guiza has the experience of elevating his game come tournament time, as well as understanding what it takes to win with the selection. Neither Llorente or Negredo have that. Its necessarily their fault, and they certainly are the future of the team, but this may be one of our best chances to win the whole thing, so why not take a proven player to help you do that.

Also, I agree Pedro should go, but does he dislodge Mata or Navas? Probably not, and it that case, Del Bosque does not even really play with wingers, he likes attacking midfielders like Cesc and Iniesta more so.

  • Rod

Corey,Pedro is not dislodging any of the wingers he should go as a striker as I have been saying a billion times before on this subject he is an ace up the sleeve a player that can be a game changer who can poach or shoot a rocket goal in pressure situations this is the guy that can change spain’s fortunes Im telling you!I did watch Euro 08 and I never saw Guiza breaking the deadlock on any game in fact he missed a penalty against Italy and those several tough games in the qualifiers I never saw Guiza stepping up I saw other players doing that. PS Javi Martinez is on Fire! Incredible Skill and an eye for goal not bad for a central defensive mid Martinez over senna any day!

  • Rod

all the favorites in this world cup have problems
ENgland doesn’t who’s their goalkeeper is going to be,their starting center backs have had bad seasons or have barely playrd because of injury and a staring stiker who can’t score goals (heskey).Argentina have a moron like Maradona as a manager and have no clue in how to use Messi and putting center backs who play in Aregentina as fullbacks. Brazil doesn’t know who their left back is going to be. Italy is carrying a bunch of old men way past their prime and the majority of their players who come from a club (Juventus) who have had a crap season. Holland’s worst enemy are themselves where by the round of 16 everybody in the squad will be at each others throats. This is Spain’s time its an almost perfect set up and all Del bosque is choose the right back ups in the striker position and hope to god that all the injured player (torres, xavi, fabregas) can be 100 percent fit then I don’t see why they can’t reach the final

  • Rod

Today Negredo absolutely showed why he does not deserve to go to the world cup. What a sitter he missed against atletico! with Del Bosque watching he wasted his chance to impress while we saw a star (Navas) and a future star (Capel) take their chances.Navas needs to go because of that fantasic pace and coolness in front of goal and give him a break over his homesickness problem I think he can cope with it
